re: lin siew ching's reflection

After attending the history field trip and reading the textbook chapter 6,I learnt more about the consequences of World War II,and also about how British defend Singapore against the Japanese.I feel that British is a very brave country. The British underestimated the Japanese. However, the Japnese proved them wrong. They already have good preparation.World War II had influence many innocent people and had brought negative impacts on many countries. One such example is the shortage of food and water and also poor health conditions during the Japanese Occupation in Singapore.

Many feared of the Kempeitai and because of it's harsh punishments.I think Singaporeans must have suffered under the tough circumstances.I think these people are very pitiful as they are innocent.Despite under these tough circumstances, the people of Singapore still did not believe that Singapore would fall under the Japanese attack. This shows that people of Singapore are confident people.

To me,I feel that World War II is a cruel event that has resulted in many people's deaths.I feel that this is a very sorry state. Moreover, lots of problems still occur at the end of the Japanese Occupation(shortage of food ,water and electricity). The people must have felt very unfair towards them.I also feel that the Japanese people were very cruel.

Lastly,I can infer that the lives of the people during the Japanese Occupation was horrible as there are lots of death and poor health conditions, illness like malnutrition.

re: farhani's reflection

i think that the Malay soldiers, were very brave to have faced the Japanese soldiers, despite having countless number of problems and difficulties. For example, even though they did not have enough soldiers, they fought with the Japanese soldiers bravely plus determination till the end. Their courage and bravery were so touching as they sacrificed their lives for the country.

I too think that the Japanese leader, lieutnant-general, Tomoyuki Yamashita, was very smart and fast. He really planned every step he was going to make at that point of time. Thus, the steps he took were right, he managed to get to Singapore in days faster than expected. Whereas the Japanese soldiers, were cruel.

The villagers in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation was terrible. They were treated so badly. Regardless of their gender and age. However, different race The Japanese killed innocent people.

re: jasmine's reflection

what have you learnt from the field trip and project world ?
"ta'at setia" which means "death before dishonor" was the motto of the malay regiment. adran bin saidi, my favourite war hero, was a leader of the malay regiment. he was a clever and courageous individual. under his leadership, many japanese soldiers were killed. the malay regiment and the japanese soldiers have have something in common. they are loyal to their own country and are willing to die for it. i have also learnt that lieutnant-genernal tomoyuki yamashita is a clever, determined, loyal and fair individual. he was clever in tricking lieutnant general percival to surrender singapore to the japanese. when lieutnant genernal yamashita heard that a bunch of japanese soldiers killednabout 200 people in the mount alexandra hospital, he had them executed after "complaining" to the japanese emperor. (is yamashita compassionate?) bukit chandu rocks! when i was watching the cartoon in bukit chandu about the battle for pasir panjang, my heart felt very sad, but no matter how much i forced, not even a single tear could come out. i will rate it 5 stars ! i will watch it a thousand times, i could!!!

shu qing's reflection

I think that the Singaporeans then were very courageous. They did not try to escape or flee during the Japanese Occupation. And I think that the British persevered even though in the end they were indirectly forced to retreat and let the Japanese occupy Singapore.
Besides that, the Japanese leader, lieutnant-genernal tomoyuki yamashita, was very smart as they were able to reach Singapore in 90 days, which was very fast, as travelling was not very fast in the past. But at the same time, I think that they were very cruel and heartless because they killed many British and ill-treated the people of Singapore. They also ruined the people’s peaceful lives, causing them to live in constant fear and they had to suffer with the shortage of food. That also leads to many deaths.
The Japanese did not have evidence if the Chinese were guilty of helping China. Even if there was, but not everybody were involved in it. Some of them were innocent but all of them still have to face the punishment given by the Japanese. They treated the races differently. The children, who were the most innocent ones, had to suffer too. They were forced to sing the Japanese national anthem and not Singapore’s national anthem. Apart from that, they had to learn Japanese, which was not a language that they were supposed to be studying. The Japanese deprived their rights and freedom.

Ee Ee's reflection

i learnt that during the Japanese occupation the living conditions of the people are horrible and the Japanese are biased as the Malays were respected. the Chinese were treated very badly and many died from hunger or malnutrition.

mass media and education

As the Japanese did not want the locals to come in contact with the outside world, the Japanese controlled the mass media. The local Chinese and English newspapers published only news that favoured the Japanese. Only Japanese movies and propaganda films were screened in cinemas. Therefore, there was no way the locals and the outside world could contact or knew what was happening inside or outside.
In school, the students were taught the Japanese language. Every morning, these students were made to sing the Japanese national anthem too.

how the eurasians was treated during japanese occupation

The Japanese punished the Eurasians too because they looked like the Europeans. Those who were thought to be the helpers of the British were shot.
The other prisoners who remained in Singapore, were made to clean up the city, bury the dead and restore water and electricity supplies. As there was also a shortage of food, many of the them were malnutrition.

how the indians was treated during japanese occupation

The Japanese wanted the Indians to join the Indian National Army (I.N.A.) To fight against the British in India. But because they were unwilling to kill their people, many of them refused and some were killed by the Japanese. The Indians were also not spared from the Death Railway.

how the malays and europeans was treated during japanese occupation

The Japanese soldiers arrested some Malays from the streets and sent them to Thailand to build the Death Railway. The Death Railway was in Thailand. The Malays and Europeans used simple tools to fell trees and cut rocks. They were made to work long hours and were given insufficient food. And, they were severely punished if they did anything wrong. As a result, many them died there. This was also how the railway became known as The Death Railway

how the chinese was treated during japanese occupation

During the Japanese Occupation, all the races were treated very differently. Of all the races, the Chinese were treated very badly. They were punished very severely as the Japanese thought that the Chinese were the greatest threat, because the Chinese helped China to fight the Japanese. The Chinese men, aged between 18 to 50, had to go for an anti-Japanese examination. During the examination, the Japanese would scan the people and identify those whom they thought were anti-Japanese. Those Chinese, whom the Japanese thought were not anti-Japanese, would be taken to the Changi Beach or some other beaches on the east coast. Then, the Japanese would shoot them. Those who were not identified as anti-Japanese were allowed to go home then.

life in singapore during japanese occuapation

The Japanese wanted to curb anti-Japanese activities, as well as to punish the Chinese who had provided aid to the Chinese activists in the Sino-Japanese conflict.
On March 22, Chinese leaders from Malaya and Singapore were penalised and asked to pay a sum of 50 million Straits dollars as "tributary money."
As most had already had their property and assets destroyed during the war, it was a monumental task to raise the money. They finally took a loan of $21.5 million from Yokohama Specie Bank at 6% interest.
The incident curtailed the circulation and caused a shortage in Straits currency.
A large quantity of Japanese currency, also known as "banana money", was issued.
The exact amount is unknown even to the Japanese, as these currency did not bear any serial number; only block letters.
Food rationing
Ration cards were often the only way to get food. However, the quality of food was not always good. Rice had weevils and stones in them. One of the most serious problems during the Occupation was food shortage. The people of Singapore were encouraged to grow their own vegetables.
In addition, the Japanese also issued ration cards to control supplies of rice and other essential items.
You could not get any provisions from shops if you did not have this ration card.
Each adult was given a ration of 4.8kg of rice per month and each child 2.4kg. This amount was subsequently reduced to 3.6kg per month for adults.
Even then, these ran out before long. Click here to read about the hungry years.
Skyrocketing prices
The scarcity of goods sent prices sky-rocketing. The table below show how different prices were just before - and after the war broke out.
Item 1941 ($) 1945 ($) Rice - 1 picul (about 60.5kg) 5 5,000 Egg - 1 dozen 0.24 120 Quinine powder 1.50 15 Shophouse 5,000 - 6,000 160,000 - 250,000 The "Chop" of Life
This means you get to live. This must have been the most treasured item during the Japanese Occupation. Without it, you might have to die. Troops of the Japanese Imperial Army would conduct spot-checks. The people had no way of knowing whether they would be given security clearance. If they were cleared, they would get this rectangular mark.
If it had been a triangular mark, they would be taken away and killed.
Some had the mark printed on their clothes. The printed area would then be cut and carried around wherever they went.
Others had their arms or legs marked.
Some people would go for months without bathing for fear that the marks would be washed away.
From this... the strait times ...to this the shonan times

The Japanese took over several newspapers.
These appeared under different names. The Straits Times was renamed The Shonan Times and later, Syonan Shimbun.
The Shonan Times was the official newspaper in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation.
The paper ran on Tokyo times, normally two hours ahead of Singapore. Staff had to come to work in the dark, working through to sundown.
The Shonan Times was run by Japanese officers from the Propaganda Department, who threatened to behead anyone who spelt the Emperor's name or title incorrectly
